FRANK CHO

 photo IMG_2184.jpg

I had a great time hosting Frank Cho here on Friday, May 16th. I got to talk to Frank quite a bit, since I drove him from and to his hotel in San Jose. I found him to be a terrific guy. He’s very friendly and open, and a terrific storyteller.

He was incredibly generous with his sketches. He did free sketches for everyone who asked! This is quite rare for artists to do this, especially famous artists like Frank. I bet lots of people will be kicking themselves if they missed it. Make sure to plan on attending the next great Lee’s Comics event. If you don’t, you never know what you’ll miss!

Frank generously signed all of his books for us, so stop by our Mountain View store and pick up a signed copy of one of his great books at no extra charge, while they last.

FABULOUS FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!

Free Comic Book Day just keeps getting bigger and bigger! It's now, by far, our busiest day of the year. This year, we upped orders on the titles by 20%. We ordered over five thousand comic books to give away. Despite this fact, we ran out of most titles by 6 pm. That's why we always tell people to come early for best selection. This year we included a parking lot tent sale of 25¢ books at our Mountain View location. I think it really added to the event. It expanded the psychical boundaries of the event, and spread the people around more. It was a very nice day, and it had the feeling of a rock festival. We had nice lines of people well into the afternoon.

I like to give the free books away outside. People can take their free books, and just walk away, no strings attached. Most people opted to go inside and shop around. There were lines for the register most of the day, but not too bad. We were also ringing up sales outside, and could also take credit cards thanks to my iphone and the square.

Here's this year's photo parade.

It's 8:00 am, the banner and the flags are up.

Now to add a tent with 2 8-foot tables covered with 20 long boxes of quarter books. Most of them never offered before. Then add a rolling counter and 2 tables loaded with 57 different free comics. It's 9:30, and we are starting to roll!

Folks choose their free comics. My pal, Mark Arnold is here to help me out.

Families stop by in wave after wave.

Too bad every day can't be like Free Comic Book Day!

A very orderly crowd keeps lining up to choose their free comics.

The quarter box tent was a big hit!

We'll have to do more tent sales, especially in the nice summer weather.

At 11:00 pm we did a drawing. The prize was a complete set of all the 2014 Free Comic Book Day Comics in a handsome Lee's Comics canvas tote bag. Here's the lucky winner, Ayanne Sawyer! Ayanne told me she never won anything before. Hopefully she'll enjoy reading all 57 of this year's Free Comics!

Thanks to all who attended this great event at either of our Locations. Make sure to attend next year! Remember, it's always on the first Saturday in May. We're going to make next year even better!
