FRANK CHO RIDES AGAIN!

 photo frankcho600dpi.jpg

We had an awesome time hosting Frank Cho here on Tuesday October 28th, 2014. He was here to celebrate the release of his brand new book "How to Draw Beautiful Women, The Frank Cho Method", from Flesk Publications. Frank is a great artist and storyteller, and everyone who attended had a grand time! If you couldn't make it, we still have a few signed copies available at the store. The book will soon be making it's way to finer book stores worldwide.

Stay tuned for details on the next blockbuster Lee's Comics event!

FRANK CHO

 photo IMG_2184.jpg

I had a great time hosting Frank Cho here on Friday, May 16th. I got to talk to Frank quite a bit, since I drove him from and to his hotel in San Jose. I found him to be a terrific guy. He’s very friendly and open, and a terrific storyteller.

He was incredibly generous with his sketches. He did free sketches for everyone who asked! This is quite rare for artists to do this, especially famous artists like Frank. I bet lots of people will be kicking themselves if they missed it. Make sure to plan on attending the next great Lee’s Comics event. If you don’t, you never know what you’ll miss!

Frank generously signed all of his books for us, so stop by our Mountain View store and pick up a signed copy of one of his great books at no extra charge, while they last.

FABULOUS FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!

Free Comic Book Day just keeps getting bigger and bigger! It's now, by far, our busiest day of the year. This year, we upped orders on the titles by 20%. We ordered over five thousand comic books to give away. Despite this fact, we ran out of most titles by 6 pm. That's why we always tell people to come early for best selection. This year we included a parking lot tent sale of 25¢ books at our Mountain View location. I think it really added to the event. It expanded the psychical boundaries of the event, and spread the people around more. It was a very nice day, and it had the feeling of a rock festival. We had nice lines of people well into the afternoon.

I like to give the free books away outside. People can take their free books, and just walk away, no strings attached. Most people opted to go inside and shop around. There were lines for the register most of the day, but not too bad. We were also ringing up sales outside, and could also take credit cards thanks to my iphone and the square.

Here's this year's photo parade.

It's 8:00 am, the banner and the flags are up.

Now to add a tent with 2 8-foot tables covered with 20 long boxes of quarter books. Most of them never offered before. Then add a rolling counter and 2 tables loaded with 57 different free comics. It's 9:30, and we are starting to roll!

Folks choose their free comics. My pal, Mark Arnold is here to help me out.

Families stop by in wave after wave.

Great sales inside the store.

Too bad every day can't be like Free Comic Book Day!

A very orderly crowd keeps lining up to choose their free comics.

The quarter box tent was a big hit!

We'll have to do more tent sales, especially in the nice summer weather.

At 11:00 pm we did a drawing. The prize was a complete set of all the 2014 Free Comic Book Day Comics in a handsome Lee's Comics canvas tote bag. Here's the lucky winner, Ayanne Sawyer! Ayanne told me she never won anything before. Hopefully she'll enjoy reading all 57 of this year's Free Comics!

Here's a picture of me and my buddy Dwight Boyd.

Thanks to all who attended this great event at either of our Locations. Make sure to attend next year! Remember, it's always on the first Saturday in May. We're going to make next year even better!

PODCASTS

In traveling from my home to the store, I spend at least an hour a day in the car. I find that one of the best ways to make the time go by fast is to enjoy a podcast. If you have a smart phone, you can download them easily and free. Here’s a look at some of my favorites:

The Moth
This is my very favorite podcast. Professional and amateur storytellers get up before a live audience and tell true stories. Most of these stories are extremely well told. Sometimes they are so good that you’ll stay in your car even after you’ve reached your destination, because you are so spellbound.

Radio Lab
Each episode delves into some phenomenon. It’s usually a societal issue, or a scientific question.  They skip all around in search of an answer. They mix sounds and music with the narrative, and it can mesmerize the listener. It’s really thought provoking and well done.

This American Life
This show is the father of all great podcasts. Each week is a fascinating one-hour morality play. Like Radio Lab, they mix in voices, various sounds and music. It’s very rarely less than fascinating.

Ted Talks
Most people are probably familiar with Ted Talks. These are lively lectures, featuring leading innovators and ground-breaking ideas. Usually they are quite interesting.

History of World War II
I’m a World War 2 history buff, but there is still an awful lot that I do not fully understand about the conflict. This podcast is filling in a lot of the blanks for me. So far there have been a hundred episodes, and they have not yet gotten to the invasion of Russia, or the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which prompted the US to get into the war.
The speaker and sole creator of the podcast, Ray Harris Jr. is not a polished speaker. He does not have a good radio voice, and he puts the emphasis on the wrong words. Despite this deficit, you soon overlook the verbal quirkiness, because the material is so interesting, and his research is so thorough. It takes him forever to put up new episodes, but this won’t be a handicap to you as a new listener, until you catch up with the 100 episodes he’s put up already. Hopefully me, and Ray will live long enough to get to the end.

Real Time With Bill Maher
I watch Real Time each week, so why do I listen to the Podcast? Well, the podcast contains extra features. First there’s “2 Minute Maher” which broadcasts previously unheard outtakes from the opening monologue of each week’s show. Then they play the whole episode. I usually skip that since I’ve already watched it at home. But if I missed some or all of it, it’s a good was to hear it. After that, they have “Overtime”. All the guests stick around for a few more minutes to answer questions from the audience. This is all very entertaining and lively for Real Time fans.
